Global Strategy Co-Creation
Client: DENSO
Digital Platform Development for Mobility Circular Economy and Integrated Manufacturing for India
Background
Future-oriented co-creation initiatives are being actively promoted to address social issues in Global South (“GS”) countries. These initiatives aim to support market growth in these regions while simultaneously contributing to the revitalization of the Japanese economy. In such industrial cooperation initiatives, the technologies, know-how, and knowledge developed by Japanese manufacturers in the process of maintaining and enhancing their competitiveness are considered essential for the economic development of GS countries. Through collaboration with local businesses in these regions, the creation of new business opportunities is highly expected.
Recognizing this momentum, DI and DENSO, with support from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), have joined forces to carry out a demonstration project for a digital platform aimed at strengthening India’s manufacturing supply chain and mobility industry infrastructure.
Support overview
This project is a joint initiative with DENSO to realize data-driven business, aiming to create new business opportunities that go beyond the boundaries of conventional automotive parts manufacturing by addressing key challenges in India’s manufacturing and mobility sectors.
[Phase 1] Market Analysis and Feasibility Study
DI supports DENSO in the exploration of business opportunity and development of business strategy in India. Through market research, several critical challenges in India’s manufacturing sector have been identified.
<Major Challenges in the Indian Manufacturing Sector>
・Low productivity in the manufacturing sector driven by fragile supply chains across suppliers, factories, and logistics service providers.
・Immature automotive lifecycle business due to lack of coordination among key players such as dealerships, repair shops, recycling facilities, and insurance providers.
・Compared to global companies, Indian manufacturing sector as a whole lacks sufficient GHG emission reduction measures, resulting in delayed progress toward carbon neutrality.
Recognizing potential business opportunities through the resolution of these challenges, concepts for two new businesses centered around an integrated digital platform have been developed.
- Integrated Manufacturing
A digital platform designed to enable the integrated management of supply chains comprising of multiple manufacturers, providing a solution to improve productivity in India’s manufacturing sector by streamlining procurement, sales, production, and logistics. In addition, the platform enables monitoring of GHG emissions (Scope 1–3) throughout manufacturing and logistics processes, thereby supporting the industry’s transition toward carbon neutrality. - Mobility Circular Economy
A digital platform service that enables vehicle owners to easily manage processes such as repair, sale, and disposal. Data analysis from vehicle sales is expected to advance the development of the automotive lifecycle business in India.
[Phase 2] New Business Demonstration
The new business plans formulated during Phase 1 were selected in July 2025 for demonstration under the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)’s “Industrial cooperation programme in the Global South through technology transfer from Japan”. The demonstration has been launched in India under the project titled “Digital platform development for mobility circular economy and integrated manufacturing for India by collaboration with open API network in India and Japan” (scheduled to be completed by November 2027).
This demonstration project aims to promote the deployment of Japanese digital technologies and services in the automotive and manufacturing sectors through the demonstration of a digital platform for integrated manufacturing and mobility circular economy, “Solwer”, in the Indian market. To support the effective use of Solwer, digital and AI skills training programmes will be launched to provide upskilling opportunities for the local workforce.
