Koichi Abe
- After completing a master’s program in the Graduate School of Engineering Science at Osaka University, he joined Toray Industries, Inc. and engaged in research on films, mainly polyester films.
- In 1996, he was certified as a research fellow in film structure design. After serving as General Manager of the Film Research Laboratory, General Manager of the Research & Development Planning Department, and General Manager of the Aichi Plant, he was appointed Director and General Manager of the Research Division in 2005. He subsequently served as Managing Director and Representative Senior Managing Director, and was appointed Representative Executive Vice President in 2014. From 2011 to 2022, he concurrently served as CTO. In 2022, he became Representative Director and Chairman of Toray Research Center, Inc.
- During this time, he served in positions including member of the Central Council for Education of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology; member of the Research Strategy Council of RIKEN; Vice President of the Chemical Society of Japan; Director of the Japan Science Foundation, a position he currently holds; and member of the Cabinet Office Council of Experts on Material Strategy, a position he also currently holds.
- He was appointed Senior Advisor to DI in December 2025.
